As people have already mentioned, day trips to Verona and maybe Milan are good ideas. On the lake itself, I would recommend taking the cable car from Malcesine up Monte Baldo. The views are great and it feels so refreshing to be in the cooler air at the top on a hot day! The journey from Desenzano station to Sirmione should take around 20 minutes.
